Work Party

Chiltern Way Steps by Chalk Hill As you may have heard over the last year a number of us have been considering setting up a footpath maintenance volunteer group in association with the Chiltern Society and Central Bedfordshire Council.  This came about following John Savages talk to the fish and chip supper last year.

We are now in a position to start work and are looking for volunteers to make up our work teams.

In the central area of the Chilterns the working parties have a work pattern that involves meeting at about 9.30am on a weekday morning.  Teams depart to their job for the day, work until 12.30/1 pm and then meet back at a pub for lunch.

We do not need to follow exactly this pattern.  If you would be interested in finding out more please email julian clark-lowes (personal@julian.clark-lowes.info) or ring 07979 435856.  Please indicate how often you might be available for work parties, Monthly? Fortnightly? Weekly or just occasionally.  Please indicate whether you might be available for occasional weekend work parties or weekday mornings or afternoons.  When we have gauged the response we will arrange a meeting of all those interested to discuss the project further.  This will probably be in one of the community rooms at Dunstable Fire station.

The first project involves work to the steps where the Chiltern way crosses over the A5 at the chalk cutting.  Phase 1 of this project involves replacing about 6 steps which have rotted away or are giving way.

We drive to Hemel Hempstead (Gadebridge) and leave our vehicles beneath the trees at the freebie open-air car park ….. It’s where the Park and Ride buses start from on the A4146.  We shall then wend our way on foot, through Gadebridge Park and Hemel old town, before joining the Nicky Line, proceeding as far as the village of Redbourn – most probably for an early lunch stop.  From past experience the next part of the walk towards Stags End may be muddy in places so be warned! Whatever the state of the path, be cheered by the prospect of a hot cuppa to come as it is intended that we should next head for Piccotts End and the Garden Centre tea shop.  From there it’s but a short hop back to our cars.

Starting from Treasures Grove car park on the minor road between Streatley and Lilley (where the Icknield Way and John Bunyan Trail meet, not far from Telegraph Hill) we follow a little of the Icknield Way and the John Bunyan Trail round towards Lilley.  Here we hope to stop at the Lilley Arms before returning through Kingshill Plantation back to the start.  This is a fairly easy walk with only one stile but at least one fairly steep hill.  However there should be some good views of the valley, villages and Bedfordshire's Chiltern AONB.

Meet time 9.30 am
Meet at Priory Middle School
Return about 1.30 pm
